Sun 1 April Earth, Air and Water: Walk, Write and Draw the Harbour

10am / 5 hours

After an introduction in the classroom we will stroll along the shoreline to record the sights in words and images. Afterwards we will use our observations to create a piece of work that captures the essence of what we saw. With local artist Tim Gwyther. Bring a sketch book and drawing materials together with your choice of media for your final outcome.  Also bring a packed lunch and outdoor clothes.

Tue 3 April     Egg and Shell Hunt at Dell Quay

10am / 2 hours

Learn about harbour babies, hunt for shells and look for clues to answer a harbour-themed quiz to win chocolate egg prizes. Dress to get muddy and bring a small bucket for your finds. No dogs. All attendees must attend safety briefing at 10am.

Sat 7 April Northney Explorer Walk

10am / 3.5 hours

A 4½ mile (7.5 km) walk from Langstone over the Hayling Island bridge to explore the Northney countryside and shoreline. We will stop at the Northney Farm cafe for refreshments and to hear about farming in an AONB with the farmers Mary and Stan Pike. Bring some money for the cafe. Some paths may be muddy.

Tue 10 April   Early Morning Beach Walk: East Head

7:30am / 1.5 hours

Celebrate the arrival of spring and, hopefully, warmer weather with a 3 mile (5 km) walk on the beach at the entrance to Chichester Harbour when the tide is very low.

Fee: £3 on the day

Wed 11 April  Earth, Air and Water: Marine Creature Shadow Puppets

10am / 3 hours

Make a large articulated shadow puppet or smaller shadow puppets with a screen. Sue Ogilvy, artist and Conservancy teacher who lived in Indonesia and studied shadow puppets will show you how. All materials will be provided, please bring a torch.

Sat 14 April    From The Cathedral to the Church Walk

10am / 2 hours for the walk

A 4 mile (6km) walk from Chichester city centre and through the countryside of Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to finish in the shoreline village of Bosham. Hourly public bus service back to Chichester.

Fee: £3 on the day

Sat 21 April Cans, Cones and Cardinals

11am / 1.5 hours

Solar boat trip with special commentary on why we have the harbour markers and buoys and what navigation in the harbour involves. This is a fun introductory session and not intended as formal training in navigation.

Sun 22 April Earth, Air and Water: Point and Shoot Photography

10am / 2 hours

An early morning walk around East Head with your digital camera. Led by Sussex artist/photographer Barry Williams we'll explore the shoreline at low tide. Ideal for 'Point & Shoot' photographers, this event is all about discovering that there is more than one way to view the world around us. Bring your own camera (check you have enough battery power), outdoor gear and footwear for muddy conditions. Follow up review session on 27 May in our meeting room at Eames Farm to learn techniques for exhibiting your work.

With the guidance of local enthusiast Karen Berry, we will explore the harbour shoreline and hedgerows at Dell Quay, looking for and identifying edible plants, fruits and seeds.

Sun 29 April Walk and Solar Boat Trip

3pm / 2 hours

Enjoy a 2½ mile (4km) countryside walk led by a guide from Itchenor to Chichester Marina in Birdham. Then take a trip on the solar-powered boat for a chance to view the harbour from the water, finishing back at Itchenor. Bring footwear for muddy paths, a snack and warm clothes for the boat.

10am / 2 hours

A short stroll with time to discover the historic building stones around Old Langstone, including hearing about recent studies on the building of the first Langstone bridge. With David Bone, local geology enthusiast.

Mon 14 May  Listening for Cetti’s Warblers    

9am / 2 hours

A bird watching stroll on Thorney Island taking time to listen out for Cetti’s Warblers. With Conservancy Warden and bird enthusiast Barry Collins. Bring binoculars. No dogs.

Tue 15 May   Songs of the Sea

7:00pm / 1.5 hours

An evening of music and stories about the lives of the sailors on the ocean going sailing boats of years gone by. In the company of Education Officers Gary James and John Tierney (retired). Musical ability not essential but do come along prepared to take part!

A stroll along the shoreline at Nutbourne, taking time to look for and identify the birds of the hedgerows. With local keen bird watcher Mick Evans. Bring binoculars. No dogs.

Meet the dairy farmers Mary and Stan Pike and learn all about how they manage their land in the protected landscape adjacent to the harbour. See the cows being milked. Afterwards you can visit their café for refreshments and to enjoy their home produced ice cream which will be on sale. All attendees must attend safety briefing at 2pm.

1pm / 2 hours

Our unique gathering of boats and crew that work in Chichester Harbour. Climb aboard, meet the crews and explore the working vessels. Will include the Conservancy’s mooring barge, solar boat and fast patrol boats, the lifeboats from Hayling Island, plus many others. Safety note: this event takes place on the public jetty, please take care at all times when on the jetty and boarding the boats.

Thur 7 June   Solar Heritage Trip: I Spy

11am / 1.5 hours

Departs from Itchenor. A trip especially designed for younger ones and their families. What can you spot whilst enjoying a trip on the solar boat?

Fri 8 June     Introduction to Fishing and Crabbing Competition

12:30am / 3 hours

Find out what you need and what you do, and then try some fishing from the quay. Also, a crabbing competition for children, with prizes. Bring any fishing gear you have, including a crabbing line and bucket. We will have some kit to share round. Wear warm, outdoor clothes. Refreshments will be available but you might like to bring a picnic. For all ages. With Allan Blamire and colleagues from the Apuldram Fishing and Boating Club. All attendees must attend safety briefing and welcome at 12:30am.

If you are interested in wild flower books but have never learnt how to use one properly this is our new event for you! An opportunity to be shown how to access a wild flower key and plenty of opportunity to practise on local specimens in the classroom. With John Arnott, wild flower enthusiast. If you have them please bring a wild flower key, preferably the one by Francis Rose, and a hand lens (or magnifier).

A chance to stroll around Hampshire Council Council’s restricted access nature reserve at Sandy Point on Hayling Island. We will look for and identify the distinctive plants of this protected coastal heath and sand dune area. With Pete Potts, Senior Hampshire Countryside Ranger.

Thur 14 June           Talk: The Development and Role of the CHIMET Weather Station

An opportunity to find out more about how the CHIMET weather website was developed, how it works and what information it can give us about the weather in the Chichester Harbour area. With Barry Blaydes, one of the masterminds behind it all.

A special opportunity to visit a protected site for native orchids and other wild flowers in the company of Conservancy Warden Barry Collins.
