Easter is the most important festival of the Christian faith; it is
central to all that Christians believe, with the message that God brings
new life out of death. In the northern hemisphere it coincides with
spring, when nature itself is emerging from dormancy.
However Easter begins on a sombre note, beinc preceded by the weeks of
Lent, traditionally a time of abstinence (in the past a practical
necessity due to the lack of fresh food).
Towards the end of Lent we begin to reflect on the impending death of
Jesus, (his "Passion") and the week before Easter he enters Jerusalen in
triumph on Palm Sunday.
During Holy Week the drama unfolds, as Jesus shares a last meal with his
friends, before beinc betrayed and abandoned to face death alone. It
seems that even God has deserted him.
All this is eclipsed by the joy of Easter Sunday, when we gather to
celebrate that Christ is risen
The Christians of Emsworth invite you to share in the commemoration of
this greatest of all stories of life, death and eternal life. |
