Wednesday 20th February 2019 "Mothballs and a Whiff of Whisky" Emsworth Museum Illustrated talk by Nigel Gossop. Eccentric novelist Dr William Gordon-Stables was a prolific writer of adventure stories for children and adults. Born in 1837 he joined the navy in Portsmouth as a Naval Surgeon. After his retirement in 1871 he travelled around the country in a gypsy caravan named The Wanderer. He is remembered today as the founder of the UK institution — The Caravan Club. Friday 1st March Emsworth Methodist Church Celebrating World Day of Prayer at 2.00pm. World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. The preparation for the day is vast. An international committee is based in New York and there are national committees in each participating country. Regional conferences meet to consider the service and then local groups make their plans. The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 120 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world — through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas before finishing in American Samoa some 38 hours later.

Apart from formal business our Chair, Stephanie Elsy, will present the Neighbourhood Plan that has been submitted to Havant Borough Council for public consultation and examination by a government Planning Inspector. We are also inviting speakers from Havant Council, the Emsworth United surgery/cottage hospital campaign and the Emsworth Community Land Trust to update us on their work. Wednesday 19th June  ‘Poisoned Beds’  at Brook Hall (old Baptist Church).  Written jointly by Chichester-based Greg Mosse, and Havant’s Lucy Flannery their play features original live music by another celebrated Havant resident – John Gleadhall.  Through West Sussex actress Paula Tinker the play is set in December 1918 and is a captivating story of one woman’s preparation of a concert to celebrate both women’s suffrage, and the end of the Great War.  However there’s a twist in this clever combination of comedy and sadness in that she can’t celebrate the future without reconciling herself to her tragic past – it’s not just the Oyster beds that human folly has poisoned !
