July 13th 2006 Emsworth Hosts Market Towns Awards Conference

" The EBA together with South East Rural and Market Towns Partnership hosted a conference at The Brookfield Hotel on Thursday 13th. July- delegates came from Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Kent, Sussex and of course Hampshire. This was a prime opportunity to showcase Emsworth to other Market Towns and all that is good about business in this special community.
Awards were given to other towns that had shown the ability to work together to improve the business environment-Haslemere were the overall winners with Whitchuch Uckfield and New Milton also winning recognition for their work[Emsworth did not enter this year but we hope to do so in the next round of competitions]
70 delegates attended and were impressed with our town they had an opportunity of visiting the Terror, the Emsworth Sailing Club and to hear from the harbour master why Emsworth is so important in maintaining and developing environmental and leisure activities in and around the harbour. The delegates were also conducted on a short walking tour of the town.
This proved to be a great opportunity to showcase Emsworth and we especially thank The Brookfield Hotel, Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Emsworth Sailing Club, Emsworth Food Festival and Emsworth Bus Company [Who provided a luxury coach[free of charge!] to convey delegates around the town]
Also our gratitude to members of the EBA and Brook Meadow Nature Reserve who gave their time and expertise to this unique event.
At the conclusion one of the organisers said" What a fantastic day! Thank you for allowing us to have a glimpse into this super working town-we will come back again"

Brendan Gibb-Gray.

8th April 2006 - Traditional Boat Building Day

Wooden boat enthusiasts are attended the fourth in a series of Traditional Boat Building Days on Saturday 8th April at Dolphin Quay Boatyard, Queen Street, Emsworth.

A steady stream of visitors were able to follow the progress of the restoration of Terror, a Victorian oyster boat that was originally built in Emsworth and is now being restored with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.  The hull is virtually finished and soon the decks will be added so this was last chance to get a good look at the structure of the boat. The boat is due to be launched  at the
Emsworth Food Festival on Friday 8th September.

A display showed the history of the vessel and those working on were available to answer questions.

Wooden boat experts from the boatyard were on hand giving demonstrations of restoration techniques as well as to answering questions and provide guidance and advice. Projects recently completed by the yard were also on display.

The open day was organised by Chichester Harbour Conservancy in conjunction with Dolphin Quay Boatyard who are undertaking the restoration of Terror, the day is funded by the Heritage Lottery.   Fund.

The Conservancy arranged the day as part of their commitment to support boatyards within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and to maintain the traditional skills needed to preserve the precious fleet of wooden boats kept in Chichester Harbour.

5th April 2006 - Community Responders

The first meeting to publicise the Community Responders scheme for Emsworth was held in the Community Center. About three dozen residents attended together with representatives from several town
organisations Colin, from the Hampshire Ambulance Authority explained how the scheme worked and what training and support would be provided and representatives from Hauling Community responders which has been up and running for sometime gave advice from their practical experience.

Something in the region of £4,000 will need to be raised to get the scheme up and running in Emsworth, The Business Association and the Residents Association have committed funds to help get the scheme started and the Co op through their community support card are committed to raising up to £10,000 donating 3p per pound spent on presentation of the card.

Several new volunteers offered their services at the meeting and it is anticipated that a formal meeting of volunteers will be held shortly to "get things moving".

Not the terror as is currently in the news but "The Terror" Emsworth's last remaining oyster smack currently undergoing restoration.  The authors of The Cook Book have kindly donated the profits to the Emsworth Heritage Project to help ensure the "Terrors" future.
