 finally, some Emsworth News....................

Just doing his bit sees Emsworth ‘special’ win accolade

Richard Owen has been with Hampshire Constabulary as a member of policestaff for 18 years and currently works in the Criminal Justice Department has been awarded the MBE for his voluntary work as a special constable.

He joined the Special Constabulary in 1993 and currently serves Havant as Divisional Officer.  His special constable duties included a community beat function in Emsworth where he is very well known to local residents.  He is a constant presence providing reassurance and acting as a link between the village and constabulary.

He demonstrates true leadership as a special constable encouraging and supporting others volunteers during official engagements, and engaging with local organisers to ensure the smooth running of official events, such as the Remembrance Day parade Richard was the winner of the Hampshire Special Constable of the year award in 1998 devoting significantly more hours to his role than is required or expected.  In 2012 he completed 428 hours in addition to his full time role as a member of police staff.

In his spare time he is a life long Portsmouth Football Club supporter and the voluntary club historian.  During a career break he wrote two books connected to this interest and continued his duties as a special constable throughout.

Mr Owen said: ‘This was a bit of a surprise to me, and is in recognition that I’ve been doing this for 19 years.

‘I suppose the big issue is that I’m a volunteer and I make time over and above my regular job and other commitments to do it.

‘I just wanted to do my bit.’

Food Festival Revival

Following consultation with the public and meetings with Havant Borough Council, Emsworth Residents' Association and the Emsworth Business Association

The ad hoc group set up to investigate the feasibility of reviving the Emsworth Food Festival in 2013 has concluded that it will not be possible to hold the event next year.  However the group is seeking sponsorship to take forward the idea of a 2014 Food festival.

Friends of Nore Barn Woods announce completion of phase One of work to protect the shoreline.

We are delighted to announce that the construction work, to preserve our  beautiful shoreline, has been completed on time and within budget.

The next phase is to clad the new rammed earth bank in concrete "Lego type"  blocks, making it last a lot longer  Of course this all depends on us  raising yet more funds and any contributions or suggestions would be most Welcomed.

Santa Lights up Emsworth

On 30th November Santa visited Emsworth to turn on the Town’s new Christmas Lights.  The Lights, provided by the Co op’s community fund, lit up the square above a crowd of over a thousand who turned out for the occasion.

The event largely organised by Carol Haskett and Sue Treagust, members of the Emsworth Business association was a truly community event led by Rev. Simon Sawyers, vicar of St James’ Church.  Simon reminded the crowds of the true meaning of Christmas, led the community singing and amused one and all with his jokes!

The Emsworth Concert Band, who also gave a concert in the church on Sunday 9th December, provided the musical accompaniment

to carol singing and entertained the crowds with seasonal music before the event got underway, a group of singers and guitarist from Emsworth Primary School entertained the long queue of children, parents and grand parents waiting their turn to meet Santa, Richard Owen, Emsworth’s Special Constable was on duty, coincidently on his birthday, a nativity scene was on display in the centre of the Square, many of the town’s pubs and cafés provided seasonal fare and many shops stayed open late.

Local councillor Brendan Gibb-Grey and chairman of the Emsworth Business Association said,

So many people turned up and commented that it’s only Emsworth that puts on such a
great event for the community that represents the true meaning of Christmas.

We take our hats off to Carol and her right hand woman [Sue] and all the  team that helped to ensure that all passed off in peace and safely. The band  and the singing of carols was heart warming.

It was a magnificent example of the Business Association, Community Association, St James' Church, Havant Rotary and the Pastoral Centre working together and achieving so much for so many.”

Four of the six winners of the Emsworth Santa Hunt;  who attend the Thorney Island CP School, The correct names of the shops hiding a Santa were Alwen Wines, Sue Foster Fabrics, Emsworth Home Hardware, Bookends, Awareness and Emsworth Flowers
