A Science Discovery Group Talk by Dr Mark Chapman Associate Professor, University of Southampton. 7.30 pm at the Community Centre We rely on a surprisingly narrow amount of genetic diversity (both in terms of the range of crops, and the varieties of each) for our food. I will discuss how our understanding of evolutionary processes more generally can lead to conclusions (or at least hypotheses!) about why this is. I will also discuss our growing understanding of so-called ‘underutilised’ or ‘forgotten’ crops.

That’s why we need “wildlife corridors” – vital areas of habitat that link the South Downs National Park with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the coast broadly follows the lower part of the River Ems. . The Museum will be commemorating the event with an exhibition reflecting the lead up to D-Day and the impact on the local area and people connected to Emsworth.

Saturday 27th& Sunday 28th July Bourne Quilters bi-annual Quilt Show at Emsworth Community Centre on Saturday and Sunday 27 and 28 July;10 am - 3.30 pm.  The show is an opportunity for members of Bourne Quilters to exhibit their work created during the last two years. All five rooms at the community centre will be filled with over 200 exhibits of bed quilts, wall hangings, bags, cushions, fabric art.

Saturday 19th October Portsmouth Baroque Choir Autumn Concert looking back across 450 years and selected a half-dozen names associated with choral music to celebrate alongside the programme’s main feature, the centenary of the death of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford: Robert White (d. 1574), John Willye (baptised1574), Giacomo Carissimi (d. 1674), Anton Bruckner (b. 1824), Edward Bairstow (b. 1874) and Giacomo Puccini who, like Stanford, died in 1924. Thursday 7th November “Cross-Dressed to Kill” Emsworth Community Centre 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm An Emsworth Maritime and Historical Trust Talk  Presented by Vivien Morgan An exploration of women in the 17th to 20th centuries who went to war dressed as men. There were hundreds of known women cross-dressers in Britain, Europe and the Americas, yet they have been erased from both social and military history. Vivien tells some of their fascinating stories. . Tickets: You must book a ticket in advance to be sure of entry. Sunday 10th November Youth and Community Remembrance Parade and Service.   The Parade and service is on Sunday 10 November 2024. Parade is led by the Horndean band. followed by Girls Brigade, Girls guides. Scouts.and the Army from Thorney Island. The parade will set off from the bottom off Queen Street at 2.15 pm and proceed up through the town to St James Church for the service of Remembrance at 2.45 pm. The Deputy Mayor of Havant will be in attendance. After the service, the parade will form up outside of the Parish Hall and return via St James road, North Street, and into Palmers Road by Tesco's and then the Parade %/A be dismissed. Friday 29th November Christmas Lights Switch On  and  the arrival of Father Christmas. The fun will start at 5.30pm in St Peters Square and will see community carol singing and music, the arrival of Father Christmas, stalls supporting Emsworth Primary Schools and The Cantando Choir performing. Children will also have the chance to visit Father Christmas in his grotto at Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club 6.15pm.

Saturday 7th December Portsmouth Baroque Choir Music for Advent and Christmas at 7pm, which will be at the Havant  United Reformed Church. The programme includes glorious music from the 17th century by Byrd and Palestrina and carols from closer to our times by Holst, Arvo Pärt, Kodály and local composer Ian Schofield.
