Havant Borough Council acknowledges the Government’s announcement to withdraw its Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) decision for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight pending a review of the programme.

The council is awaiting clarification from the Government on the next steps for local authorities in Hampshire. The scheduled elections in May 2027 will now be for Havant Borough Council rather than to the shadow authority.

Leader of Havant Borough Council, Councillor Gillian Harris, said: “We’ve worked hard to represent the best interests of Havant in the LGR process and achieve the best outcome for residents in our borough.

“Whilst this announcement does cause uncertainty, we will continue to work closely with local authority colleagues in Hampshire to ensure we are as ready as we can be to respond positively when the Government shares the results of its review.

“We committed to fully engaging with the LGR programme, but we have made sure we maintained a strong focus on continuing to provide the best services possible to residents in our borough. This remains our focus while we await the outcome of the Government’s review.”
